STORY: The financial figures are in, and Michael Jackson's memorial service cost the city of Los Angeles 1.4 million dollars. The money was used to provide security, traffic control and clean-up services. A spokesman for cash-strapped city hailed the tally a success, noting that it was "far less" than the initial estimate of 4 million dollars.

Actress Kate Beckinsale accepted 32,000 dollars in libel damages over a story in Britain's Daily Express newspaper. The paper reported that she was not going to land her dream role as Barbarella. Her representatives said that the story was entirely false and had caused considerable embarrassment and harm.

Paris Hilton is on trial in Miami. The heiress is accused in a federal lawsuit of not doing enough to promote her 2006 sorority hijinks movie, "Pledge This!" Finally, Daniel Craig will make his Broadway debut this fall. The James Bond actor will star in "A Steady Rain," a play about a pair of Chicago policemen. Opening is scheduled for September 29.
