CONCERT ENDING STORY: Puerto Rican hip-hop band Calle 13 gave one of their trademark high-energy shows in Lima, Peru on Saturday (March 29). The Grammy-award winning group delighted fans in Lima with their eclectic sound mixing hip-hop, jazz, rock, and electronic music. An eleven-piece band backed frontman Rene Perez Joglar, who formed the band with his brother, producer Eduardo Cabra. At a news conference before the show, Joglar talked about the formula behind the band's infectious sound, one that has hit a nerve with young people across the globe. "Urban music should respond to what's happening and be a search for everything that surrounds you- the music and everything and in addition to that fusion. We're a band with eleven people on stage. We believe in music. We like DJs and the electronic tracks that my brother does but mixed with music. We think that Latin America has a lot of varied music to grab things from and make music and go to different countries," Joglar said. Fans sang along with popular songs, intoning Calle 13's innuendo-laden lyrics that have been acclaimed for being both smart and funny. When asked about the band's explosion in popularity, the lead singer said people like their sincerity and musicianship. "I think they've captured that thing that is genuine and real in us. We say what we feel and that's what our fans like. And I think it's the musicians as well. We have some credibility on the level of music," Joglar said. Joglar and Cabra, known by their stage names of Residente and Visitante, started Calle 13 in 2005 and it quickly became one of the hottest band's in Latin America's popular music scene. |
